USAGE AND DOSAGE OF HARVONI®
Hepatitis C is a deadly liver disease that is caused by viral infections that cause damage to the liver. They are characterized as genotypes based on the type of infection. There are 6 genotypes numbered from 1 to 6. If the affected patient’s HCV type is genotype 1, 4, 5 or 6; the possible cure for the disease suggested by specialist physicians at the United States may be a drug named harvoni®. This drug was the first one to be a cure for hepatitis C taking a single tablet per day. Cure for this disease means, after taking the treatment for the disease and 3 months later, the blood should be negative to HCV when tested.
The physician considers several factors like the genotype of the disease, treatment history, viral load, presence and extent of liver damage and whether the liver has been transplanted or not. Also the patient’s nature of allergy for the two components of harvoni® is enquired on, before the drug is prescribed.
In general, harvoni® treatment for hep C virus affected persons is prescribed for a period of 12 weeks. But depending on the severity of the disease, the treatment may be reduced to 8 weeks or increased to 24 weeks. The drug can be taken with or without food but has to be consumed at almost the same time everyday i.e. at an interval of 24 hours. Only one pill per day is to be consumed. In case one forgets to take the drug at the usual time, it has to be taken as soon as he/she remembers it. But if it is time for the next dose by the time he/she remembers about the forgotten tablet, then it is better to skip the day’s drug and take only one.
