HARVONI® – THE SAVIOUR FOR HCV INFECTED PERSONS
Hepatitis C is a viral infection that affects the liver and causes damage to it leading to cirrhosis of the liver in chronic stages. This is a very symptomatic infection i.e. The symptoms of the disease are seen in the infected person as early as four to six weeks from the infection. The treatment for this viral disease is not very common in all countries. The cost of the treatment is expensive.
In India, a company named Gilead Sciences Inc. manufactured a generic form of the drug in the name Harvoni®. It is a combination of two life saving components ledipasvir and sofosbuvir that prevent the multiplication of the Hepatitis C virus in the infected body. A complete cure of the disease takes a minimum of 8 weeks of treatment and extend up to 12 or 24 weeks depending on the severity of the infection. The duration of the treatment depends on the viral presence in the body, extent to which the liver has been damaged or to the medical history of the patient.
It has been announced as a generic drug in India and thus some of the leading pharmaceutical companies are licensed to manufacture the drug at competitive costs to make it available for everyone. The same drug is sold at expensive prices in other countries. Insured patients are even given aids to buy this drug to treat themselves from the infection. There are people from other countries who travel to India through companies which arrange for surgical vacations. These vacations involves travelling to places where the drug is available at a lesser cost when compared to that of their home countries. Also the companies arranges for the appointments with specialist physicians in India so that they can avail the entire treatment in the same place. The reason for consulting Indian doctors is that prescriptions from other countries are not valid in India to sell life saving drugs.
